Freelancing Sites

E-mail Print PDF

This wqeek, I'm referring you to 3 sites instead of 1, largely because they all supply a similar service; it is just a matter of which one works best for you. Plus I could have included a few more! So I will talk about these sites generally, all as one.

The sites I am referring to are internet marketplaces for freelancers to source work from businesses who are looking to get a specific task completed at a cost effective rate. The simple process is a business posts a certain task they require doing, specialists in that particular area then bid for the work. The customer then chooses who they wish to complete the work and then through the website the customer can manage the fulfillment of the negotiated work contract.

Here is an example; I am starting a business building widgets and I need a logo to put on my business cards, letterheads, cars etc. I post what I am looking for on Elance.com including some background and brief and then wait for the bids to come in. Once the bids are in you can assess not only what they are proposing but their qualifications, ratings, portfolios and skill test scores. You then award the contract to your preferred graphic designer. While they are producing the concepts you can check their timesheets and progress online via the website until you are happy with the completed work. You then simply pay the contractor the amount owed and get possession of the final design. You can then repeat the process for creating the website and so on.

It is a process all business owners go through however by using a website like odesk.com you can access talent and skill sets from around the world, not just in your local area.

However, as with any service especially an online service, it is open to scams so be cautious with who you choose to work with.

The sites provide you with the flexibility to get things done at a cost effective rate in a short period of time. Give it a go with your next project and see the response you get.

globaia.org

E-mail Print PDF

This website is beautiful and interesting with one particular page that blew my mind.

Globaia is an educational organisation helping people to understand and hence participate in discussions around our environment.

One of the main philosophies of this organisation is that we have commenced a new geological period in the earth’s life, the Anthropocene. The reason for the claim is that humans have now had such an impact on the earth’s ecosystems that it has actually changed the planets ecological direction and hence a new era has started.

The impacts have been on climate change, biodiversity crisis, pollution of lands, seas and the air however do not expect explanations on these topics. The website does not delve into these topics to any great depth; the site is more of an advertisement for their services.

The reason I have mentioned this website is that it contains some stunning imagery and infographics. The page I spent a lot of time on is ‘The Cartography of the Anthropocene’ page. This page graphically represents the development we have made on earth. Everything from flight routes through to undersea pipelines is shown demonstrating the extent that humans have covered the planet.

It was particularly interesting to look at the ‘Global Transport System’ infographic alongside a Google Maps webpage and work out what the busiest nodes are.

I cannot imagine the resources that went into this page but it was well worth it and it is worth your time surfing around the site.

Scaling Watermark

E-mail Print PDF

With the ever increasing reach of the internet and in particular social media sites such as Facebook our images we have created and shared with an initial few are now being accessed by a lot more people than we initially intended to.

Scaling Watermark assists you to retain ownership of the images you create by allowing you to add a watermark to the photo which changes size as the photo is resized. This means it will always remain readable.

It is a simple program to use without any bells and whistles.

I can also see this app as a great help to identify a series of images online so if some do get separated you know what series they came from if you use a descriptive watermark.

Plain, simple and does the job.

cleanenergyfuture.gov.au

E-mail Print PDF

This website is less than a week old and I would assume has had many hits in the last 5 days.

The primary reason this website was created is to provide you with the information on the new Carbon Tax which was launched by the Prime Minister last Sunday.

The area that will be of most interest is the calculator which provides you with two calculations.

1. The first is how much the carbon tax will cost you
2. Then, how much the Government will compensate you for price rises due to the tax.

It gives you clear and concise results which are very easy to understand.

What I am wondering is whether the assumptions the Government and Treasury have made are correct and will they reflect what will actually happen.

Carbon Conscious Calculator

E-mail Print PDF

This is more of a website but is basically an online calculator which acts as an application.

The amount of carbon we emit is as a result of the actions we take every day, but we do not see them. They are an intangible and it is not something we can measure so we can track our progress.

This calculator uses some basic figures to work out what your emissions are from activities like:

• Your car travel
• Your plane flights
• Your power usage
• Your gas usage
• The waste you create

They also have a calculator for businesses and the opportunity to offset your emissions by planting some trees.

It is a valuable exercise to complete to give you an idea of your impact on the environment.

climatehotmap.org

climatehotmap.org

The carbon tax is a hot topic at the moment with our political leaders talking their ideas up and the opposition’s opinions down.

Whether you believe it is manmade or not, Global Warming is happening and the effects are being felt across the planet.

This website, climatehotmap.org maps out on a world scale the effects that climate change is having on us and the earth. The ‘Hot Spots’ are broken down into 5 separate areas: people, freshwater, oceans, ecosystems and temperature.

There are simple tick box filters which allow you to explore particular areas of impact in different geographical locations. It makes it easy to explore and learn.

The website is compiled by a collection of scientists so there is some serious research behind the simple design.

It is very educational and also very emotional at the same time and we all need to take collective responsibility to help those that are being affected.

USB Safeguard

E-mail Print PDF

Every now and then we will revisit some of the more popular reviews we have done in the past so if you are a new reader you do not miss out on some of the good ones.

This one is from May 2010.

USB Thumb Drives are one of the best inventions ever! They really do put floppy disks to shame. These things can now hold over 100GB of data … so they’re incredibly useful for moving files around the place.

But that’s also one of the problems. What happens if you have 100GB of your personal data, “holiday” photos and other personal information on a thumb drive and you should lose it? Whoever finds it suddenly has all your stuff and you have no way of deleting it or recovering it! Potentially very embarrassing – or if it’s irreplaceable photos or company financials – it could be devastating.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could easily encrypt all the data so that it was easy for you to access on any PC you plug it into, but should you lose it, no one else could see anything.

USB Safeguard is that tool.

It runs on any USB Thumb Driver, doesn’t need installing and you copy files on and off through the drag & drop method you’re used to.

If you’re a Windows7 user, you could consider BitLocker (as it is built in) but what happens if you want to use your USB Thumb Drive on a non-Windows7 PC?

Give it a go. It’s easy to use and completely free.

By the way – this tool did fire off a virus warning on my PC, but I can assure you it is perfectly safe.

4 out of 5 stars

visualize.me

E-mail Print PDF

You are getting in on the ground floor with this website as it has not been launched yet.

It is called visualize.me and in my opinion I think it is going to revolutionize the way resumes are presented.

If you have ever applied for a job or looking to fill one you will know how boring and stale looking at resumes can be. Other than the ‘future truths’ included in them they are generally boring and repetitive. Well this website will give you the opportunity to jazz your resume up and stand out from the pack.

Think of this website as LinkedIn but in pictures. This website creates a picture of your resume, it creates an infographic. This will make your work history, your skills and your successes easy to read and understood immediately. Meaning your resume will be read before everyone else’s.

With our attention being more and more diverted, requested infographics are going to become the main means of communicating an idea or to make a point, why not start with your resume.

Virtual DJ

E-mail Print PDF

This App is for the younger audience and the young at heart. If you enjoy your music and enjoy playing around with music then this App is something for you to consider.

It is software that allows you to create your own simple playlists and mixes without the purchase of expensive DJ equipment. However this App does work in concert with most major mixing consoles so you can get to that level if you so desire.

You do have to have some musicality and passion to use the software however it is easy to learn and a great training tool for those amateur mixers.
